It's a little blue pill that's easy to use and it works for most men. But some men find they need it for their erectile dysfunction.
That’s because Viagra, which is sold by Pfizer and now Pfizer, has been around for years. The pill was first introduced as an ED treatment in 1998.
Now Pfizer is working on a similar treatment called PDE5 inhibitors to help men with ED get the relief they need. It’s a type of muscle relaxant called a PDE5 inhibitor that blocks the effects of a naturally occurring chemical called cyclic guanosine monophosphate.
“This is a good option for most men who have ED, but it can be hard to choose,” says Dr. Ian Read, Pfizer's chief scientific officer.
Read says he thinks Pfizer is going after Pfizer because they are selling it off the shelves for $4 a pill, which is more expensive than trying to sell the drug at the same time.
Pfizer has not yet announced how much the price of the drug will be.
In the meantime, he says, people should be able to take the pill with or without food.
Viagra is available as a prescription, but most men take it for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, according to Dr. Read.
“This is a very common treatment for people with erectile dysfunction,” Dr. Read says.
Viagra is sold by Pfizer as an oral tablet. Pfizer is now offering it as a generic, meaning there is no difference between the brand name and the generic, and the price of the medication is $5 a pill.
The generic is the same as Pfizer’s brand-name version, which is also sold as a pill.
The treatment is available for free to men over 18, and the Pfizer website offers it on a per-pill basis.
Viagra will be available starting on May 7.
